Writings and Video on the Indian Police
I joke about year 26 of my life having been devoted, almost singularly, to the Indian police. That is a little true, and it was an assignment I went into without having ever really studied – or wanted to study – India or policing.
So I tried full-throttle, and maybe the most fun parts were hanging out at the John Jay School of Criminal Justice and learning to lift fingerprints; joking with a half-dozen constables about their boss; and trying to figure out how to capitalize on Slumdog Millionaire. Here are some results:
“Abusive and Abused,” International Herald Tribune/New York Times Global Edition, August 4, 2009
“Broken System: Dysfunction, Abuse and Impunity in the Indian Police,” Human Rights Watch, August 2009.
“To Protect and Serve: Police Brutality in India” (video), Human Rights Watch, August 2009.
